This song is a gossipy, bitter anthem for anyone who has ever used humour as a way to deal with pain.
Though much of it is exaggerated (never let the truth get in the way of a good song as they say) I wrote it last year after becoming aware that someone that I had had a difficult past with, wanted me to be at their wedding, after several years of no contact.
As I retold the situation to my friends, in slight disbelief, I couldn't help but find whole thing just very funny. I tried to imagine what going to this wedding would be like. Would I show up and be met with a room full of people that knew we didn't like each other? What would they say? Would I hate the whole thing and have to go home and cry? Perhaps I'd have one too many drinks and end up doing the worm in the middle of the dance floor and ruin the first dance... 💃
But ultimately what sat behind my wall of humour was the feeling of hurt. That they wanted me to be there for their wedding, but they didn't really want me in their life.
I said to my husband Tom as we walked home one night "I know I'm really fun at a wedding, but I don't like feeling like I'm being wheeled out for weddings and funerals..."
and Tom responded with "that would make a great name for a song though..."
That night between 10 and 11pm I wrote "Weddings and Funerals" in one sitting.
I have often said that my biggest litmus test for songwriting is if something makes me laugh and through writing this song, I laughed and laughed and laughed. But the true emotion of the hurt hopefully comes through in the final lines of the song – so keep your ears out for that final line ♥
OH and PS
I did not go to that wedding, so I guess this serves as my RSVP 😘
I hope you like it and I hope you scream it in your car.
Enjoy, love Essy x
